The sixth form is the final two years of school in the UK, when pupils begin to specialise and prepare for university.
There are three sixth form curriculum options available
- the traditional A-Levels with 3-4 main examinations subjects and an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
- the Pre-U, seen as a more challenging version of the A level
- the IB diploma, seen as a more international option, in which both sciences and humanities are compulsory
Each school decides on the preferred curriculum and all three diplomas are recognised at universities in the UK and the US.
When selecting which subjects to study, top universities, such as Oxbridge recommend focusing on more academically rigorous subjects, also known as ‘facilitating subjects’.
These are the sciences, languages, history, geography, English literature and mathematics, which provide the strongest preparation for university study.
The 16+ assessment varies from school to school, typically includes
- written exams at the school to test the candidate’s knowledge in potential A-Level/IB/Pre-U subjects
- school reports to assess the candidate’s academic potential
- a reference letter from the candidate’s current school
- for overseas candidates the UKiset to test the candidate’s English and reasoning ability
